There are many people who support children with cancer — family members, teachers, pastors, and friends — but on September 22, we have the opportunity to specifically honor the mothers of these precious children.
You have never truly met a hero until you’ve met the mother of a child with a life-threatening disease. They are warriors in the truest sense of the word, and we are humbled and honored to have the chance to recognize them and hear their stories.
Read on to find out about our Handbags and Heroes Luncheon, coming up on Thursday, September 22, at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens!
What Is Handbags and Heroes?
The Handbags and Heroes event is a chance to honor mothers who become the caregiver for a child as they go through treatment for childhood leukemia or another type of cancer.
It’s part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which is nationally recognized as September. Additionally, it’s part of aTeam’s GO GOLD! campaign to help promote and raise awareness for childhood cancer.
What Will the Luncheon Be Like?
Our Handbags and Heroes Luncheon will take place from 11:30-1:00 on Thursday, September 22, at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Food will be provided by Savoie Catering.
All attendees will have the incredible opportunity to meet real-life heroes — the mothers of children with cancer. There will also be some very special items up for silent and live auction from Betsy Prince, SOCA, Gus Mayer, and more!
Kim Hudson, wife of Major League pitcher Tim Hudson and founder of the Hudson Family Foundation, will be the speaker for this event. The Hudsons have a strong passion for helping families who are going through the pediatric cancer journey. While Tim pitched for the Atlanta Braves, he and Kim were known to visit the Children’s Hospitals of Atlanta on a regular basis and support many children and families going through pediatric cancer.
